Director Mira Nair, who has made films like ‘Salaam Bombay’, ‘Missippy Masala’, ‘Kamasutra’ and ‘The Namesake’, is celebrating her 65th birthday on Saturday, October 15. Meera was born in Rourkela, Odisha. After this he completed his early studies in Delhi from where he continued his schooling by going to Shimla. From school days, Meera’s interest was in literature. Later he completed his studies by going to Harvard University and after reaching there he made acting his passion.
Many documentaries made in the beginning
Initially Meera was interested in acting. He performed in several plays written by Bengali artist Badal Sarkar. After this his interest in filming was awakened and he started making small documentaries. First he made a black and white film called ‘Jama Masjid Street General’. In this 18-minute film, Meera narrated the story of Old Delhi. In 1982, his second documentary ‘So Far From India’ was released, this film was awarded the Best Documentary Award at the American Film Festival.
Salaam Bombay’ got recognition
After making several documentary films, Meera started writing the story of her first feature film ‘Salaam Bombay’ in 1983. The film could not do anything amazing at the box office but it made a record by winning 23 International Awards. The film also won awards at the Cannes Film Festival and was nominated in the Best Foreign Language Film category at the Oscars. Late actor Irrfan Khan also played a small role in this film.
Created a sensation by making ‘Kamasutra’
In 1996, Meera made ‘Kamasutra: A Tale of Love’ which was a historical erotic romance film. In the film, Bollywood actress Rekha played the role of a sex guru. This was Rekha’s first English film. However, the film was banned in India due to nudity and bold scenes.
Do yoga with cast and crew
Meera received many national and international awards and with this she was awarded the Padma Bhushan, the country’s third most respected award in 2012. Meera also has a unique habit. Since she herself has been doing yoga for the past many years, whenever she finalizes her cast and crew for a film, every day on the sets starts with yoga with everyone. The TV series ‘The Suitable Boy’ released in 2020 was Meera’s last series. In this, Ishaan Khattar and Tabu were seen in important roles. Mira has been on a break for the past two years.
