IPL 2022: RCB ready to retain Virat Kohli and Glenn Maxwell ahead of mega auction

Mumbai | Royal Challengers Bangalore are set to retain the services of former captain Virat Kohli and Australia’s Glenn Maxwell ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction, reports NDTV. Notably, Kohli relinquished the captaincy of RCB after IPL 2021, and the franchise is yet to name its new captain. Interestingly, the 33-year-old Kohli is the highest run-scorer in the IPL. He scored 405 runs in the last season and was the third best batsman in the team. Despite stepping down as captain, Kohli is expected to shoulder the responsibility of the team’s batting. Virat Kohli is the most expensive player of IPL

Kohli was the highest-paid player in IPL 2021 as his salary stood at Rs 17 crore. Meanwhile, retaining flamboyant batsman Maxwell will not be surprising as RCB will not be able to retain star player AB de Villiers, who recently announced his retirement from all forms of cricket. Maxwell was bought by RCB in the IPL 2021 auction for ₹14.25 crore and was outstanding last season as the all-rounder worked with his spin-bowling to score 513 runs at an average of 42.75.

It is worth noting that according to the rules of IPL, a team can retain a total of four players, out of which maximum two can be foreign players. All eight current teams have until November 30 to announce the list of those players. Which they will retain, according to a report in ESPN Cricinfo, the teams are likely to get Rs 90 crore in the upcoming IPL auction. The report further states that the two new franchises – Lucknow and Ahmedabad, may pick up to three players before the auction after the retention is over.
