US Senate to vote on Garcetti’s nomination as ambassador to India today

Washington. The Senate will vote on Wednesday on the nomination of Eric Garcetti as the next US ambassador to India. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer proposed Garcetti’s nomination. The move comes at a time when Garcetti’s opponents are raising the issue of his failure to investigate sexual assault allegations against a close aide during his tenure as mayor of Los Angeles. If Garcetti’s nomination is confirmed by the Senate, he will immediately assume office as Ambassador to India. The post of US Ambassador to India has been vacant for more than two years.

The Senate will vote on Garcetti’s seal at 2:15 p.m. local time. Her nomination will then be voted on on a closing resolution that would indicate if Schumer has enough votes to confirm Garcetti as US ambassador to India. Garcetti’s nomination is pending in the US Congress (Parliament) since July 2021, when he was nominated by President Joe Biden for this prestigious diplomatic post. Last week, the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee voted in favor of Garcetti by 13 votes to eight in its business advisory meeting.

Kenneth Juster was the last US ambassador to India, who was recalled by the US government in January 2021. Ahead of the crucial vote to confirm the nomination, US India Strategic and Partnership Forum (USISPF) President Mukesh Aghi expressed hope that India would finally get an ambassador. Aghi said in an interview with ‘PTI-Bhasha’, “We expect the Senate to confirm Gassert’s nomination as the next US ambassador to India this week or by next week.”
