Ashwin becomes first Indian bowler to dismiss father and son in Tests

Rossiu. India’s veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin achieved the rare distinction of taking wickets of both father and son in his illustrious Test career when he dismissed Tegnarayan Chanderpaul on the opening day of the first Test against the West Indies. During this, Ashwin took five wickets for the 33rd time in a Test innings and completed 700 wickets in international cricket (Test, ODI and T20 Internationals) during this period. He is the third Indian bowler after Anil Kumble (956) and Harbhajan Singh (711) to achieve this feat. Ashwin made his Test debut in 2011 in New Delhi.

He dismissed Tegnarayan’s father Shivnarine Chanderpaul in this match. In the second innings of that Test match 12 years ago, Ashwin had tripped senior Chanderpaul. Ashwin, who took 474 wickets in Tests before this match, bowled young batsman Tegnarayan on Wednesday by trapping him in his spin. With this feat, he became only the fifth bowler in world cricket to dismiss both father and son during their careers. Three of the five bowlers in this list have dismissed Shivnarine and Tegnarayan Chanderpaul.

Prior to Ashwin, the father-son duo were dismissed by Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc and South African off-spinner Simon Harmer. The other two bowlers to achieve this feat are England all-rounder Ian Botham and Pakistan legend Wasim Akram. Both these veterans dismissed New Zealand’s father-son duo Lance and Chris Cairns. Ashwin dismissed Alzarri Joseph (four) in the second session of the day to bring his tally of wickets to 700 in internationals. The off-spinner has 702 wickets in 271 matches and 351 innings in international cricket, out of which he has so far taken 479 wickets in Tests.
