COVID-19: Congress urges CEC to cancel election rallies, girl can fight marathon also postponed

New Delhi: The Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee on Wednesday wrote a letter to Chief Election Commissioner Sushil Chandra, urging him to cancel large rallies in view of the third COVID-19 wave. The main opposition party also sought suggestions to the poll panel to stop PM Narendra Modi, CM Yogi Adityanath from using government machinery and public money for the inauguration and making political statements at these events. In view of the sudden spurt in the cases of corona virus in the country, the Congress party has decided to stop all its major public rallies and functions in Uttar Pradesh, including the Ladki Hun Lad Shakti Hoon Marathon. Congress fears Corona

Sources said that senior party leaders in AICC spoke to the leaders of UP Pradesh Congress and took the decision keeping in view the safety of the public. A Congress leader said that in other election states like Punjab, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur also the Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) will take a decision soon. The AICC has asked all the PCCs of the poll-bound states to assess the situation in their respective states and then take a decision on whether to postpone the rallies and public events. Party sources said that the PCC will take a decision on this soon. This comes at a time when 243 new cases of highly transmissible COVID type Omicron have been detected in the last 24 hours, taking India’s tally to 2,135. Of these, 828 people have so far recovered from the new strain.

With this new version, Maharashtra and Delhi remain the most affected states. Maharashtra tops the list with 653 such cases among the states and union territories (UTs) that have reported omicron infections so far. Out of them, 259 patients have been discharged as per the Health Ministry data on Wednesday. The state alone has reported 85 new omicron cases in the last 24 hours. With 82 cases of Omicron type being detected in the last 24 hours, Delhi’s tally has reached 464. The national capital has the second highest number of cases of Omicron infection.
