Wareham named in Australia’s T20 World Cup squad

Leg-spinner Georgia Wareham has been called up as a surprise inclusion in Australia’s squad for next month’s Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa. Wareham has not played any T20I since October 2021 after suffering a knee injury. The T20 World Cup will be played in South Africa from February 10 in which Australia is the defending champion. The team will also play three matches against Pakistan before the T20 World Cup. Meg Lanning, who is returning after a six-month break from the game, has been named captain as expected.

Two changes have been made to the team that won the series 4-1 in India last month. Lanning and Wareham come in place of Phoebe Litchfield and Nicola Carey. Apart from Wareham, the other leg-spinner in the team is Elena King. Alyssa, who suffered a calf injury on the tour of India, is expected to regain full fitness by the time the World Cup is over. “It is always difficult to pick a squad of just 15 players but we are confident that we have picked a well-balanced squad that is ready to take on the series against Pakistan and challenge for a third successive T20 title,” national selector Shawn Flegler said in a statement. ‘

“They (Meg and Georgia) bring a lot of experience to the team which is always important in big tournaments. Georgia has been troubled by injuries but her return will strengthen the team. “Flegler said,” Alyssa and Jess are expected to be fully fit after minor injuries. We have a strong squad available with plenty of variety when needed with bat and ball.” Jess Jonassen, Elena King, Tahlia McGraw, Beth Mooney, Ellyse Perry, Megan Schutt, Annabel Sutherland and Georgia Wareham.
