Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu awarded BBC Female Indian Sportsperson of the Year

New Delhi. Tokyo Olympic Games silver medalist weightlifter Mirabai Chanu has been voted the BBC’s Indian Sportswoman of the Year award for the year 2022 following a public vote. The 28-year-old weightlifter from Manipur has become the first sportsperson to win the award for two consecutive years. Earlier in 2021 also he had received this award. Mirabai is the first Indian woman athlete to win an Olympic silver medal in weightlifting. Last year, he won the gold medal in the Commonwealth Games. He won the silver medal in the World Championships in 2022.

“I am really thrilled and want to say that I will work harder in the upcoming games and win more medals for India,” Mirabai said. Other sportspersons who were nominated for the award were wrestler Vinesh Phogat and Sakshi Malik, boxer Nikhat Zareen and badminton player PV Sindhu. Table tennis player Bhavina Patel was selected for the Para Woman Player of the Year award. Pritam Siwach, former captain of the Indian women’s hockey team, was presented with the BBC Lifetime Achievement Award.
