West Indies won T20 series against South Africa by Joseph’s five wickets

Johannesburg. Pacer Alzarri Joseph took three wickets in the 19th over to turn the tide as West Indies beat South Africa by seven runs in the final T20 International of the three-match series 2-1. Joseph took five for 40 in four overs here on Tuesday to help the West Indies defend their target of 220 for eight. Chasing down the target, South Africa could only manage 213 for six despite opener Reeza Hendricks hitting a blistering 44-ball 83.

South Africa needed 35 runs in the last two overs to win. Joseph dismissed Hendrix on the first ball of the 19th over. Heinrich Klaasen, who came to the crease, hit a six on his first ball but Joseph made him walk on the next ball. On the fifth ball of the over, Joseph dismissed Wayne Parnell and turned the match towards the West Indies. South Africa captain Aiden Markram (35 not out in 18 balls) hit three fours against Ramon Reifer in the last over to collect 18 runs but the team fell short of the target. Before Joseph, wickets of Quinton Dickock (21 runs in 21 balls) and David Miller (11 runs in 11 balls) were also taken.

In addition to hitting 11 fours and two sixes in a 44-ball innings, Hendricks laid the foundation for the victory by sharing 32 runs with Dickock for the first wicket, 80 runs with Rylee Russo (42 runs in 21 balls) for the second wicket. Earlier, West Indies set a target of 220 for eight on the basis of an unbroken 59-run partnership for the ninth wicket between Romario Shepherd (44 not out in 22 balls) and Joseph (14 not out in nine balls).

The team was in trouble after losing the eighth wicket for 161 runs but Shepherd hit two fours and three sixes to put them in a strong position.For the West Indies, Nicholas Pooran scored 41 off 19 balls with two fours and four sixes and opener Brandon King scored 36 off 25 balls with the help of four fours and two sixes. The first match of the series was won by the West Indies while the second match was won by South Africa chasing a record target.
