Haryana’s Puneet Yadav won the 10,000m title with a record in his athletics championship debut

Haryana’s Puneet Yadav made a dazzling debut by creating a meet record and winning the 10,000m title at the AFI National Open Under-23 Athletics Championships here on Saturday. Puneet clocked 29:44.64, which was a minute better than Kartik Kumar’s (30:41.66) time of winning the title in the inaugural championship last year. Farooq Chaudhary of Uttar Pradesh won silver and Rohit Kumar of Delhi won bronze. Sumit Golian had finished third but was ‘disqualified’ after being found ‘over age’.

In men’s triple jump, Akash Varghese of Kerala clocked a personal best of 15.70m and won the gold medal. J Mohanraj of Tamil Nadu secured the second position and S Robinson secured the third position. In the women’s triple jump event, Malala Anusha secured the first position with an effort of 12.79m. Yogita Kumar won the gold medal in the women’s shot put event with a personal best performance.
