thomas cup and commonwealth games win made 2022 memorable for indian badminton

With a historic Thomas Cup win and unprecedented success at the Commonwealth Games, India has taken a strong step towards becoming a world badminton superpower by 2022. With the grit of PV Sindhu, the enthusiasm of young Lakshya Sen and the determination of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, the Indian players also won six individual titles on the BWF (World Badminton Federation) tour. Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medalist, has three titles in her kitty this year.

These include the Syed Modi International, the Swiss Open Super 300 tournament and the Singapore Open Super 500 tournament. Apart from this, he also won the gold medal in the Birmingham Commonwealth Games. After that, however, an ankle injury forced him out for the rest of the season. Not only Sindhu, Indian male players also put up memorable performances this year. They ended the dominance of China and Indonesia in this competition by winning the Thomas Cup in Bangkok. Sen won his first Super 500 title and a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games.

Apart from this he entered the finals of two other tournaments. This year was also very memorable for Satwik and Chirag. He won a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games and a bronze for the first time at the World Championships, apart from two titles on the World Tour. Sen and Satwik-Chirag made title debut at the Indian Open Super 500 tournament. Almora resident Sen Pullela became the first Indian since Gopichand to make it to the finals of the All England Championships. Apart from this, he also reached the final of the German Open.

The real breakthrough for the Indians came in the month of May in the Thomas Cup. India won this prestigious tournament for the first time under the leadership of HS Prannoy and Kidambi Srikanth. Srikkanth played brilliantly during this period, winning six matches in a row, while Prannoy played well despite an ankle injury. Sen also performed well in the final, while the pair of Satwik and Chirag played a key role in India’s title win. The celebration of this historic victory was not over yet as the Indian sportspersons put up a stellar performance at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games in August, winning six medals which included three gold, one silver and two bronze medals.

While Sindhu ended the long wait for a gold medal, the pair of Sen and Satwik-Chirag also won gold. The women’s doubles pair of Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly won the bronze medal but India had to settle for silver in the mixed team event. The pair of Satwik and Chirag then created history by winning a bronze medal in the World Championships. They became the first Indian men’s pair to win a medal in this event.

Both of them then showed their power in Paris as well and won their first Super 750 title in the form of French Open. Prannoy also had a good year and continued to perform well. Prannoy reached the quarter-finals seven times, the semi-finals twice and the final once in various tournaments this year. India’s junior players also performed well and Shankar Muthuswamy grabbed the headlines by winning a silver medal at the World Junior Championships. He also became the world number one player in boys’ singles.

Tasneem Mir also managed to reach number one in the girls’ category. Unnati Hooda won her maiden BWF title in January at the age of 14 in the form of Odisha Open. Para badminton players also performed well during this period. Pramod Bhagat, who won a gold medal in the Paralympics, won his fourth gold medal in singles at the World Championships. Manisha Ramdas won the gold medal in the women’s section. With the Olympic qualification starting in 2023, Indian players will leave no stone unturned to make it to the Paris Olympics.
