Shikhar Dhawan’s statement regarding World Cup 2023, said- preparations will start from Bangladesh tour

India’s stand-in captain Shikhar Dhawan on Wednesday said the upcoming limited-overs tie against Bangladesh is a “more practical tour” as India prepares for next year’s World Cup after the team’s ODI series defeat against New Zealand here. Rain, however, saved India from losing the series by a huge margin. Chasing a target of just 220 runs for the win, the New Zealand team scored 104 runs for one wicket in 18 overs. The team was 50 runs ahead with the Duckworth method. Had there been two more overs (20 overs) in the match, New Zealand’s victory would have been almost certain. Dhawan said after the match that the senior players would be back on the upcoming tour of Bangladesh. It will be a more practical tour in terms of preparations for the World Cup. Asked about the junior players in the team, Dhawan said that during the match it is important to understand things like where to pitch the ball and what length to keep. We are a young team and they (young players) must have learned to bowl at a good length. We bowled more short balls. He said that when the conditions are not favourable, we have to focus on building partnerships. Of the six matches (three T20 Internationals and three ODIs) on this tour, only two resulted in a result.

 

Dhawan hoped that the weather would be good in Bangladesh. New Zealand captain Kane Williamson led the team brilliantly during this period and cleverly changed his bowlers. He said that whenever we play cricket, we want to do better than ourselves. We did well even in the rain affected matches. We knew that the result would be out in 20 overs itself. This kind of weather has been following us for the last few weeks. Edel Milne (3/57) was slightly injured but wanted to play the match as he was in good shape. Now our focus will be on the upcoming Test series.
