Young player can break Virat Kohli’s record in IPL, predicts Ravi Shastri

New Delhi. Former India head coach Ravi Shastri believes that Gujarat Titans opener Shubman Gill can break Virat Kohli’s record of scoring 973 runs in an Indian Premier League (IPL) season. In the 2016 season of IPL, Kohli, the then captain of India and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), scored 973 runs at an average of 81.08 and a strike rate of 152. During this, he scored four centuries and seven half-centuries.

Shastri said during a question-and-answer session that Gill has the ability to get ahead of Kohli and being an opener gives him extra chances to score runs. He said, “He (Gill) is an opener and because of this he will get more opportunities to score runs. I believe it will be Shubman Gill as he is in very good form and also bats at the top of the order. So he will get more chances to score runs.

Shastri said, “The pitches are good and so if he scores 80 to 100 runs in two-three innings, then by then he will have 300 to 400 runs in his name.” It is very difficult to break because 900 runs is a huge number but one thing is opener will get two extra matches and two extra innings so if possible only opener can break this record. The list of batsmen with most runs in a single season includes Jos Buttler (863 runs) and David Warner (848 runs).
