Indian Grandmaster Vidit Gujrathi pulls off a upset, defeats world champion Magnus Carlsen

CHENNAI: Indian Grandmaster Vidit Gujrathi pulled off an upset by defeating reigning world champion Magnus Carlsen of Norway in a Pro Chess League match. It was his first win over Carlsen. Playing for the ‘Indian Yogis’, Gujrati took full advantage of the mistakes committed by world number one Carlsen. Carlsen is playing in the ‘Pro Chess League’ on behalf of ‘Canada Chessbras’ in the Pro Chess League. There are 16 teams playing rapid games in this online tournament for teams from all over the world. Gujrathi (28 years old) won by playing with the black pieces and got a technical victory over his opponent.

“Just beat reigning world champion Magnus Carlsen,” Gujarati tweeted after his win over five-time defending world champion Carlsen. Thus after defeating Carlsen, he joined the ranks of fellow Indian Grandmasters R Praggnananda, D Gukesh and Arjun Erigey. Before him, all three Indians had won over the Norwegian superstar in 2022 in various competitions.
