Youth World Boxing Championships: Vishwanath, Deschanel among eight Indian boxers in quarterfinals
Eight boxers, including defending Asian youth champion Vishwanath Suresh and a descendant, advanced to the quarterfinals on the fifth day of the youth men’s and women’s World Boxing Championships in La Nucia, Spain. Chennai’s Vishwanath (48kg) registered a 5-0 unanimous decision win over Italy’s Attravio Salvatore in the pre-quarterfinals. The Sonepat native (63.5kg) also displayed his strength and technical acumen to beat Spain’s Kakulov Enrique 5-0 to enter the quarterfinals.
Jadumani and Ashish beat Jiminez Asier of Spain and Palmisa Ajeya of Philippines respectively while Deepak beat Leiva Antonio of Argentina. In the women’s section, Bhawna Sharma (48kg) and Asian youth champion Tamannaah (50kg) won their pre-quarterfinal bouts against Poland’s Olivia Zujana and Finland’s Piä Jarvinen respectively. G Devi defeated Romania’s Ana Maria Romantov 5-0 in the 54kg category.

Aman Rathod (67kg) was the only Indian boxer to go down. He lost 2-3 in a closely contested match against Yousif Hussain of Iraq. Five Indian boxers, including two male boxers, will contest the pre-quarterfinals on the sixth day of the tournament. In the women’s section, Devika Ghorpade (52kg), Preeti Dahiya (57kg) and Mehak Sharma (66kg) will fight it out, while in the men’s section, Sahil Chauhan (71kg) and Bharat Joon (92kg) will enter the ring.
