Lt Gen BS Raju to be new Deputy Chief of Army Staff

New Delhi. Lt Gen Baggavalli Somashekar Raju will take over as the Vice Chief of the Army Staff on May 1. The Ministry of Defense gave this information on Friday. Lt Gen Raju will succeed Lt Gen Manoj Pandey, who will take over the reins of the Army after Chief of Army Staff General MM Naravane completes his term on Saturday. An accomplished helicopter pilot, Lt Gen Raju is currently serving as the Director General of Military Operations. An alumnus of Sainik School Bijapur and National Defense Academy, Lieutenant General Raju was commissioned into the Jat Regiment on 15 December 1984.

In his illustrious career spanning 38 years, he commanded his battalion during ‘Operation Parakram’ in the Western Theater and Jammu and Kashmir. The officer also served as the Commandant of the Indian Military Training Team in Bhutan. “He is an accomplished helicopter pilot who has flown operations in Somalia as part of UNOSOM II (United Nations Peacekeeping and Humanitarian Mission II),” the Defense Ministry said. Uttam Yudh Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal and Yudh Seva Medal.
