Nepal court releases rape accused Lamichhane on bail

Cricketer Sandeep Lamichhane, accused of raping a minor, was released on bail by a Nepal court on Thursday. Officials gave this information. On September 8, a Nepal court issued an arrest warrant for national cricket team captain Lamichhane after a 17-year-old girl alleged that he raped her in a hotel room in Kathmandu, police said. According to court sources, the Patan High Court ordered the release of Lamichhane on a surety of Rs 20 lakh. Lamichhane was taken into custody in October.

A joint bench of Justices Dhruvraj Nanda and Ramesh Dhakal set aside the Kathmandu district court’s order releasing former IPL player Lamichhane on a surety of Rs 20 lakh. The minor girl lodged a complaint with the police on September 5 saying that she was raped by the cricket star. Lamichhane was then sent to custody for investigation on the orders of the district court.

In October, Lamichhane wrote on Facebook that he would cooperate fully at every stage of the investigation and would fight a legal battle to vindicate himself. After this he was arrested. Lamichhane has been banned from leaving the country till the final order of the court in this matter. Leg spinner Lamichhane is the most high profile cricketer of Nepal. He was the first cricketer from Nepal to play in the Indian Premier League. He made his debut in 2018 for Delhi Capitals.
