Equal pay a step in the right direction but women’s IPL will get more opportunities

New Delhi. Cricket Board of India’s (BCCI) decision to pay equal match fees to centrally contracted women’s and men’s cricketers has been praised by the cricketing world, but experts say it is just a step towards propelling the game towards gender equality and more inclusiveness. This can only be achieved if the women’s inaugural Indian Premier League is organized in March. Under the new arrangement, the BCCI will now pay match fees of Rs 15 lakh for each Test, Rs 6 lakh for ODIs and Rs 3 lakh for T20s, at par with men’s cricketers.Although male cricketers get Rs 5 crore in category A in the central contract, while it is Rs 50 lakh for women. Former India fast bowler Amita Sharma, who has played five Tests, 116 ODIs and 41 T20Is for India, said, “It is a welcome move, it is a positive step, but if we look at the central contracts of men and women, we are still there. Gender equality is far from over. I am sure BCCI will look into it in future. ,

Former India captain Diana Edulji said, “I congratulate BCCI for making women’s match fees at par with men’s. Women’s IPL is also coming soon, this will have a positive impact on a large number of our women cricketers including domestic cricketers. This could be life changing for many ‘Uncapped’ players. But we need to take it one step at a time. The first women’s IPL will have a minimum of five teams consisting of 18 players. There will be 12 Indian and six foreign players, taking the number of local players to 60. The BCCI is yet to reveal the minimum base price but a player can expect to get at least five lakhs in a season. Another former captain Shantha Rangaswamy said, “Women’s IPL will be a game changer and I am sure BCCI will look at other areas as well. Who thought five years ago that men’s and women’s players would have equal pay and women’s IPL would be played? Former captain Mithali Raj said, “This is a historic decision taken by the BCCI and they need to be congratulated for this. I would say this is the best decision for women’s cricket in India. I am sure this will revolutionize women’s cricket in India. ,

“Our performance in the 2017 World Cup played a big role. Similarly, our bilateral series against top cricket playing nations also played a part in this. It was because of his efforts. Former Indian player and chief selector Hemlata Kala said, “Until we were not recognized by the BCCI, we did not even get match fees. We used to play because of our passion for the game, which helped women’s cricket survive. “We have seen a lot of development in women’s cricket in the last five years. If the team continues to make progress, perhaps our sport can match the popularity of men’s cricket. This cannot happen in one night, so we have to be patient.
