Solanki, Hussamuddin and Biswamitra registered spectacular victories

Gaurav Solanki, Mohd Hussamuddin and Biswamitra Chongtham registered impressive victories on the second day of the 6th Elite Men’s National Boxing Championship here on Sunday. Commonwealth Games 2018 champion Solanki (60kg) of Haryana entered the ring against Navraj Chauhan of Himachal Pradesh and defeated his opponent 5-2 after review of the match. He will now face Madhya Pradesh’s Harendra Singh in the round of 16 on Tuesday. Hussamuddin (57kg), representing the Army Sports Control Board (SSPB), defeated Assam’s Bullen Buragohain 5-0 in a unanimous decision.

Two-time Commonwealth Games bronze medalist and 2022 Asian bronze medalist Hussamuddin will face Mizoram’s Lalawmawma in the round of 16 on Tuesday. His teammate Biswamitra (51kg) also put up an aggressive display against Odisha’s N Madhaba, forcing the referee to declare him the winner by stoppage (RSC) in the first round itself. He will now face Andhra Pradesh’s Prabhudas Yadla in the pre-quarters on Tuesday.

2021 Asian Championship bronze medalist Varinder Singh (60kg), representing the Railway Sports Promotion Board (ASCB), defeated Chandigarh’s Rahul 5-0 and will now take on Ibrahim Mohammed. Ankit Narwal (63.5kg) defeated Puducherry’s Arun Kumar of RSC in the first round and will now take on the winner of the match between Karan BK and Ratandeep Sharma. Record six-time Asian medalist Shiva Thapa will start his campaign in Round 16. Thapa, representing Assam, got a bye in the first round and will now face Delhi’s Jaswinder Singh on Monday. A total of 386 boxers are competing in 13 different categories in the National Boxing Championship.
