West Indies beat UAE by 78 runs to take winning lead in series

Sharjah. Half-centuries from openers Brendan King and Johnson Charles and a first-wicket century partnership between the two helped West Indies beat UAE by 78 runs in the second ODI to take a 2-0 winning lead in the three-match series here on Tuesday. West Indies won this first series under Shai Hope as captain and Darren Sammy as coach. West Indies were bowled out for 306 in 49.5 overs despite King’s 64 and Charles’ 63 and a 129-run opening partnership between the two. Casey Carty (32), Hope (23) and Kvem Hodge (26) failed to capitalize on good starts for the West Indies.

In the end, Odion Smith played an important role in taking the team’s score beyond 300 runs by playing an aggressive innings of 37 runs in 24 balls. Zahoor Khan was the most successful bowler for UAE, taking three wickets for 44 runs. Ali Naseer, Sanchit Sharma and Ayaan Afzal Khan also took two wickets each. King hit four fours and four sixes in his 70-ball knock while Charles hit eight fours and three sixes in his 47-ball innings.

The UAE, in reply, lost five wickets for just 95 runs but managed to reduce the margin of defeat with an 80-run sixth-wicket partnership between Ali Naseer (57) and Basil Hameed (49). The hosts scored 228 runs for seven wickets. For the West Indies, Hodge made 46 while Roston Chase took two wickets for 49 runs. West Indies won the first ODI by seven wickets with 88 balls to spare.
