Australia opener Usman Khawaja believes that the top three batsmen are severely tested in England and the only way to prepare for these conditions is to work hard and expect very little. Khawaja has so far struggled to score runs in English conditions. In the six Test matches he has played in England, he has scored at an average of only 19.66. Khawaja, however, is in good form at the moment. He has scored 1608 runs in 16 Tests at an average of 69.91 since making a comeback to the Test team in January last year.
The 36-year-old batsman is expected to do well in the World Test Championship (WTC) final against India and then in the five-Test series against England. Australia will play the WTC final against India at the Oval in London from June 7, while the Ashes series against England begins in Birmingham from June 16. Khawaja told cricket.com.au, “I think England is the most difficult place in the world for three top-order batsmen.”
He said, “It is difficult to face the new ball in English conditions. Sometimes the weather is favorable there but there is a bit of luck attached to it as sometimes it is cloudy after the opposition team is out and sometimes it is sunny. To do is to gamble.
