Vasan said India should appoint AB de Villiers for T20 World Cup

Former cricketer Atul Wassan has advocated for having a completely separate coaching staff for India’s T20 team, saying that former cricketers like AB de Villiers should be hired for this short format World Cup. The Indian team lost to England by 10 wickets in the semi-final of the ongoing T20 World Cup in Australia. England will take on Pakistan in the final in Melbourne on Sunday.

Vasan told PTI, “We should not have the same coaching staff for T20 and Test cricket. You should hire the best players of your time for the T20 format. Why can’t we take the services of AB de Villiers as a mentor for the T20 World Cup. He can give better direction to the team. He can teach players how to play shots. In 2007 we had no star players in our team and it was a team of young players and they won the title. We show excessive trust in our big players to perform well all the time.

Vasan, who played four Tests and nine ODIs for India, said it has become a misconception that a player who performs well in the Indian Premier League (IPL) will play well in international cricket as well. “We have created a misconception that IPL expertise will lead to success in the World Cup as well. India have failed to perform well in big matches in do or die conditions.
