Australian Open: Sania lost in women’s doubles, pair of Jeevan and Balaji also out

Melbourne. Sania Mirza and her Kazakhstan partner Anna Danilina crashed out in the second round of the Australian Open tennis tournament, ending the Indian women’s doubles career in Grand Slam events. The eighth seeded pair of Sania and Danilina went down 4-6, 6-4, 2-6 to Belgium’s Alison Van Uytvank and Ukraine’s Anhelina Kalinina in a match that lasted more than two hours. Indian men’s doubles pair of N Sriram Balaji and Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan also went down in the second round against French pair of Jeremy Chardy and Fabrice Martin.

The pair of Balaji and Jeevan, who had entered the tournament as alternates, suffered a 4-6, 4-6 defeat, ending India’s challenge in men’s doubles as well. After losing the first set, the pair of Sania and Danilina were trailing 0-3 at one point in the second set as well, but then came back brilliantly to win three games in a row. They took the match till the deciding game but lost their rhythm again.

Sania, however, remains challenging in the mixed doubles where she has partnered with compatriot Rohan Bopanna. The Indian pair had defeated Jamie Fourlis and Luke Saville 7-5, 6-3 in the opening round on Saturday.The 36-year-old Sania, who has so far won six Grand Slam titles (three each in women’s doubles and mixed doubles), had already announced that the Australian Open would be her last Grand Slam and she would play it after the WTA 1000 Dubai Tennis Championships starting on February 19.
