Bismah relinquishes captaincy of Pakistan women’s team

Bismah Maroof has decided to step down from the post after holding the responsibility of captaining the Pakistan women’s cricket team for six years. Bismah’s last tournament as captain was the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa, where the team failed to reach the semi-finals, losing three out of four group matches. The team also lost to arch-rivals India in a romantic group match.

Bismah has so far played 124 ODIs and 132 T20 Internationals with the women’s team, out of which she has captained the team in 34 ODIs (16 wins) and 62 T20 Internationals (27 wins). The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said in a statement issued on Wednesday that she would, however, be available for selection as a player. Bismah was appointed captain of the Pakistan women’s team across all formats in September 2017 and the PCB did not say that a replacement would be announced in due course.

Bismah said, “It has been an honor to captain my country and I am fortunate to have led such an amazing and hard working group of cricketers. It has been a wonderful journey filled with ups and downs. But in the end, I am thankful to Allah for giving me this opportunity.
