Olympian Kenneth Powell, one of the country’s top sprinters, passes away

New Delhi. Olympian and a member of India’s 1970 Asian Games 4x100m relay bronze medal-winning team, Kenneth Powell passed away in Bengaluru on Sunday. He was 82 years old. The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) gave this information. Powell was one of the nation’s top sprinters in the 1960s. He overcame the disappointment of not being selected in the 1962 Asian Games team and played a key role in leading the Indian team to the semi-finals in the 4×100 meters relay at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.

Powell could not participate in the Bangkok Asian Games in 1966 after this, but he played a key role in India’s bronze medal in the 4×100 meters relay race at the Bangkok Asian Games in 1970. AFI condoles the demise of Powell who was also an Arjuna awardee. AFI President Adil Sumariwalla said that in Powell’s death, the country has lost a gentleman. He said, “It was because of athletes like Kenny Powell that Indian athletics rose in stature in the 1960s. Powell had won 19 titles in the National Open Championship and National Inter-State Games. Powell was born on 20 April 1940 in Kolar, Karnataka. He won his first medal in the National School Games in 1957.
