Sindhu and Prannoy advance, Srikanth out of Asia Championship

Two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu stormed into the women’s singles quarterfinals of the Asia Badminton Championships with a straight-game win over China’s Han Yui, here on Thursday. India’s star shuttler HS Prannoy also made it to the men’s singles quarterfinals but compatriot Kidambi Srikanth’s journey ended in the tournament. Eighth seed Prannoy beat Indonesia’s Chiko Aura Dwi Wardoyo 16-21 21-5 18-21 in an hour and two minutes, while Srikanth went up against fourth seed Kodai Naroka of Japan 14-21 22- in the pre-quarterfinals. Defeated 209–21.

Prannoy will next face Japan’s Kenta Tsuneyama. Sindhu then defeated Han Yui 21-12 21-15 in just 33 minutes in a one-sided pre-quarterfinal match. Eighth seed Sindhu will take on second seed Aun Si Young of Korea in the quarterfinals. In the mixed doubles, the pair of Rohan Kapoor and N Sikki Reddy also entered the quarterfinals. The Indian pair was given a walkover by the fourth seeded Korean pair of Seo Seung Jae and Chae Yoo Jung. The Indian pair will next take on Indonesian pair of Dejan Ferdinandasia and Gloria Emanuel Widjaja. The mixed doubles pair of B Sumeeth Reddy and Ashwini Ponnappa, however, bowed out after losing.
