In 1963, Asrani came to Mumbai with the dream of becoming an actor, where he met filmmakers like Kishore Sahu and Hrishikesh Mukherjee, on whose behest Asrani joined the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune. After completing his acting studies from the Pune Film Institute in 1966, Asrani moved to Mumbai.
Asrani started his film career in the year 1967 with the film ‘Hare Kanch Ki Chudiyan’. In the midst of all this, Asrani also worked in some Gujarati films. Asrani was noticed to some extent through the film ‘Mere Apne’ released in 1971.
Asrani was successful in making his mark in the film industry through the 1973 film ‘Abhimaan’. Asrani played the role of Amitabh Bachchan’s friend in the film Abhimaan, directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee. For his strong performance in this film, Asrani was nominated for the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor.
The film ‘Sholay’ released in 1975 proved to be a milestone for Asrani’s cine career. Asrani played the role of a jailer in the film Sholay, directed by Ramesh Sippy.
In 1977, through the film ‘Chala Murari Hero Bane’, Asrani also stepped into the field of film direction. Asrani played the lead role in this film. Bindiya Goswami was opposite Asrani in this film. The film, full of comedy, was very much liked by the audience.
After the success of ‘Chala Murari Hero Bane’, Asrani directed films like ‘Salaam Mam Saab’, ‘Hum Nahi Sudhargeen’, ‘Dil Hi To Hai’ and ‘Udaan’. Asrani was awarded the Filmfare Award for Best Comedian twice in his cine career.
