Shiv Thapa and Hussamuddin start with a win

Veteran Indian boxers Shiva Thapa and Hussamuddin began their campaign with victories at the 74th Strandja Memorial International Boxing Tournament here on Tuesday. Thapa (63.5kg) dominated from the start against Frederik Jensen Lundgaard and defeated his opponent 5-0. Hussamuddin (57kg) also looked confident as he put China’s Liu Ping on the backfoot from the very start of the bout and registered a 4-1 win to book a place in the pre-quarterfinals.

Nishant Dev (71kg) went down 2-3 to Tokyo Olympic bronze medalist Aidan Walsh of Ireland. Three women boxers from India made it to the next round on Monday night. Kalavani (48kg) defeated Tesara Cleo of Philippines 5-0 while Anamika (50kg) defeated Chang Yuan of China 5-0 to enter the next round. Vinakshi (57kg) posted a 4-1 win over Azerbaijan’s Hamzayeva Aghamaliyeva Mashati. Ankushita Boro (66kg) crashed out of the tournament after losing 1-4 to defending world champion Amy Broadhurst of Ireland.
