Wimbledon 2023: Czech player Marketa Vondrousova created history, won the title for the first time by defeating Ons Jabeur

Creating history in the women’s singles final match at Wimbledon 2023, 24-year-old player from Czech Republic Marketa Vondrousova has won the title. He defeated Ons Jabeur of Tunisia in straight sets on 15 July in the final match. Vondrousova is the lowest-ranked and first unseeded player to win the title.

 

Marketa Vondrousova captured the title by defeating Ons Jabeur 6-4, 6-4. This is the first Grand Slam of his career. With this victory, he has also created history. Last year’s runner-up and sixth seed Jabeur missed out on the title this year as well. Earlier, Marketa Vondrousova was successful in reaching the final of the French Open in the year 2019 but then she could not win the title.

 

At the same time, at the beginning of Wimbledon 2023, no one had any idea that Marketa Vondrousova would capture the title. She didn’t come to the All England Club with the goal of winning a title. But her tour turned out to be one to remember and she will return home as a Grand Slam champion. “I really don’t know what’s happening right now,” Vondrousova said after the match. It’s a wonderful feeling. Considering what I went through, it’s really great that I’m standing here with the trophy in my hand.”

 

Let us tell you that from April to October last year Vondrousova was out due to injury. Its condition was that at the end of the year 2022, his ranking had reached 99. At the same time, due to injury, he did not participate in Wimbledon last year. Vondrousova, a left-hander, has a world ranking of 42 and became the first unseeded player in 60 years to play in the final at Wimbledon.

 

The last unseeded player to reach the final here before her was Billie Jean King in 1963, who was present in the Royal Box with Kate, Princess of Wales. After the match, King hugged Vondrousova and said, “The first unseeded player. I felt great.” Due to the strong wind, the center court was covered with a roof, which Vondrousova took full advantage of. His left-handed shots often hit the right spots. Vondrousova was trailing in both sets but won the first set with four straight points before winning the last three games in the second set to clinch the title. This is his first Grand Slam title. She had lost in the final of the French Open in 2019. Prior to the current tournament, he had a 1–4 record at Wimbledon but this time he won seven matches in a row to win the title.

 

Jabeur has lost in a Grand Slam final for the third time. The 28-year-old from Tunisia is the first Arab woman and the only woman from North Africa to reach the final of a Grand Slam tournament. She had lost to Elena Rybakina at the All England Club last year and to Iga Swiatek at the US Open. Jabeur said, “I think this is the most painful defeat of my career. Today has been a very difficult day for me but I will not give up. I will make a strong comeback and will definitely be able to win a Grand Slam one day.
