Mary Kom elected chairperson of Athletes Commission
The Athletes’ Commission of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) on Tuesday unanimously elected six-time world boxing champion MC Mary Kom as its president and Olympian and Commonwealth Games 2022 multiple-medallist table tennis player Sharath Kamal as its vice-president. According to a release issued here, Returning Officer of IOA Elections Umesh Sinha handed over the certificates to the newly elected President and Vice President.
The Commission also nominated Olympic medalist Gagan Narang and two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu as its candidates for the election to the Executive Council of the Indian Olympic Association to be held on December 10. Earlier on Monday, 10 sportspersons were elected unopposed as members of the IOA Athletes Commission. Besides Mary Kom, Sharath, Sindhu and Narang, the 10 sportspersons selected in the commission include Tokyo Olympics silver medalist weightlifter Mirabai Chanu, table tennis player Achanta Sharath Kamal, hockey player Rani Rampal, swordsman Bhavani Devi, rower Bajrang Lal, former shotput player O. P Karhana and Winter Olympian Shiva Keshavan. Five out of ten players are women and all are Olympians. Only Keshavan is a Winter Olympian. Only ten players had filed nominations and all were declared elected unopposed by Umesh Sinha, returning officer of the IOA elections.
