Avinash Sable qualifies for Paris Olympics with sixth place in Diamond League

Silesia. Avinash Sable qualified for the 2024 Paris Olympics after finishing sixth in the 3000m steeplechase at the Silesia Diamond League meet on Sunday. National champion Sable clocked 8:11:63, slightly better than her national record time of 8:11.20. The 28-year-old, however, beat the Paris Olympics qualifying mark of 8:15 seconds by a considerable margin. The Olympic qualification period has started from July 1, 2023 and will continue till June 30, 2024.

Moroccan world and Olympic champion El Bakkali Soufien won the meet with a record time of eight minutes 03.16 seconds. Kenya’s Abraham Kibiwot (8:08.03) and Leonard Kipkemoi Bet (8:09.45) finished second and third respectively. Sable is the sixth Indian and the first track athlete from the country to qualify for the Paris Olympics. Apart from them, Akshdeep Singh, Vikas Singh and Paramjit Singh Bisht in the men’s 20 km walk event and Priyanka Goswami in the women’s event have also confirmed their tickets for the Paris Olympics.

Long jump athlete Murali Sreesankar has also qualified for these games. Walking is a road event for men and women in the Olympics, while long jump is a field event. The 3000 m steeplechase is held on the track. It was Sable’s third Diamond League competition of the year. This was their best performance in the Diamond League stage in terms of timing. He had finished 10th in Rabat, Morocco in 8:17.18 and fifth in Stockholm in 8:21.88 earlier this year. Sable has already qualified for the World Championships (August 19-27) to be held in Budapest, Hungary.
