Chennai Open ATP Challenger: Prajnesh, Ramkumar expect impressive performances

Indian players Prajnesh Gunneswaran and Ramanathan Ramkumar will be hoping to make full use of their wild card entries to reach the singles main draw of the Chennai Open ATP Challenger starting here on Monday. Gunneswaran had recently played in a Davis Cup tie and won the final singles match but it was a formality match. He will start the campaign against Britain’s J Clarke. Ramkumar, however, will be up against eighth seed Dimitar Kujumanov of Bulgaria, who will be challenging for him.

Chun Hsin Seng of Chinese Taipei is the top seed with a world ranking of 115. He will face Nino Serdarusic of Croatia in the first round. Australia’s second seed James Duckworth will face a qualifier. Leo Borg, the 19-year-old son of Swedish tennis great Bjorn Borg, is also participating in the tournament, which will be the center of attraction for all.

In the doubles draw, the top seeded Indian pair of Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan and Sriram Balaji will start as favourites. If the results come according to the rankings, then they will face the pair of Max Purcell and Mark Polmans of Australia in the final. About 10 players participate in the singles qualifying event.
