birth and education
Mary Kom was born on 1 March 1983 in the Churachandpur district of Manipur in a poor farmer’s family. She was the eldest of four siblings. Apart from helping her parents, she used to take care of her siblings from a young age. Mary Kom did not let the financial condition of the house affect her education. Mary completed her studies from NIOS, Imphal and after that she completed her graduation from Churachandpur College, Imphal.
career
Mary started boxing at the age of just 18. He worked hard to make boxing a career. Mary was very fond of sports since childhood. But she never took part in boxing. In the year 1998, boxer Dingko Singh of Manipur won the gold medal in the Asian Games. His victory was celebrated by the whole of Manipur. Seeing Dingko boxing, Mary was so impressed by him that she decided to pursue a career in boxing. But for this, it was a big challenge for Mary to convince her family members.

Mary was also determined that she too would definitely achieve her goal one day. So he started training without informing his parents. One day at the Khuman Lampak Sports Complex, Mary saw girls boxing with boys. Then his dream became more mature. Mary went to Imphal to take boxing training and started taking training from Manipur’s coach M Narjit Singh. She was so determined about her goal that even when everyone had left for the night, Mary continued to practice.
Women’s Boxing Championship
From 1998 to 2000, Mary kept taking boxing training secretly from her family members. When she won the Women’s Boxing Championship from Manipur in the year 2000 and received the Boxer Award. After this victory, his victory was hidden in every newspaper. It was only then that his family came to know that Mary was a boxer. After this Mary’s family members celebrated this victory. With the support of her family, Mary began to focus on her career with more enthusiasm. Then she brought laurels to her state by winning the gold medal in the ‘Women’s Boxing Championship’ held in West Bengal. Mary Kom started her career at the international level in the year 2001. After this Mary Kom never looked back.
