Delhi Capitals trust World Cup winner for WPL 2023, appoints Jemima Rodrigues as vice-captain
Mumbai Australia’s World Cup-winning captain Meg Lanning will lead the Delhi Capitals in the opening phase of the Women’s Premier League (WPL), while India’s star batsman Jemimah Rodrigues will be the vice-captain. The franchise made this announcement on Thursday. Lanning (30 years) recently captained the Australian women’s team to a record sixth title in the ICC T20 Women’s World Cup 2023 in South Africa in which they defeated hosts South Africa in the final. Jemima, on the other hand, played a key role in the Indian campaign which ended in a semifinal loss to Australia.
Thus becoming the third Australian player to be given the responsibility of captaining the team by the WPL teams. UP Warriors have appointed Alyssa Healy as the captain and Beth Mooney is set to lead Gujarat Giants. The WPL begins on Saturday, March 4, and Lanning, after being appointed as the captain of Delhi Capitals at a function held here on Thursday morning after arriving in Mumbai, said, “It is a very proud moment for me.” Lanning has played 132 T20 Internationals and scored 3405 runs in it. He said, “It is a great honor to be associated with a franchise like Delhi Capitals and then to be appointed its captain and I am looking forward to it. “It’s really important to bring the team together and mingle and get to know everybody,” Lanning said. Delhi Capitals held their first training session here (previously the host city of WPA) on Monday. Coaches and players are reaching Mumbai a few days before the tournament. The team will play its first match on Sunday against Smriti Mandhana-led Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the Brabourne Stadium. Indian opener Shafali Verma is also a part of the Delhi Capitals team. Jonathan Batty is the coach of the team while England head coach Lisa Keatley and former India player and selector Hemlata Kala are the assistant coaches.
