Girls hoisted the flag in Hockey, won the Junior Hockey Asia Cup, Anurag Thakur congratulated
New Delhi. Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur saluted women power, terming the Indian women’s junior hockey team as Asia Cup champions a historic achievement. India won the title for the first time by defeating four-time champions South Korea 2-1 in the final of the tournament played in Japan on Sunday.
Describing this victory as historic, Thakur told about the contribution of Khelo India program in the development of these players. He wrote on Twitter, “A wonderful and unforgettable Sunday. Hearty congratulations to our women power for creating history. They won the Women’s Junior Hockey Asia Cup title for the first time by defeating four-time champions South Korea with a strong display of their skill and passion.
He said, “It is a proud moment that our scouting plans to nurture young and grassroots talent is yielding such encouraging results.” Out of this team, 17 players have been associated with Khelo India and have also participated in SAI (Sports Authority of India) training at Bengaluru. Hone your skills on campus. We are very proud of you and the whole country is happy with your success.’

Announcing the award, Hockey India wrote on Twitter, “Such historic achievements deserve a bigger reward. Hockey India announces a cash prize of Rs 2 lakh to each player and Rs 1 lakh to each member of the support staff for winning the first title of the Women’s Junior Asia Cup 2023. SAI also appreciated the Indian players.
“17 players in this team are a product of Khelo India and the National Center of Excellence,” he wrote on Twitter. “Our junior team remained undefeated throughout the tournament with Annu being the top scorer with nine goals. Our goalkeeper Madhuri performed brilliantly during this period. He made some very close saves, showing excellent defensive skills. Congratulations to the players.
