Indian Grandmaster Gukesh wins World Armageddon Asia & Oceania Championship

Berlin. Teenage Indian Grandmaster D Gukesh on Sunday won the World Chess Armageddon Asia and Oceania tournament by defeating former world rapid champion Nadyrbek Abdustarov of Uzbekistan in the final. Sixteen-year-old Gukesh emerged victorious in a tumultuous contest. After missing the first game, Gukesh lost the second game but used the ‘extra chance’ to restart the contest against Abdustarov. The first game of the ‘new’ tie ended in a draw but the Indian Grandmaster won the next game to become the champion. Both Gukesh and Abdustarov earned spots in the Armageddon Grand Finale to be held in September.

Apart from Gukesh and Abdustarov, players like former world classical champions Vladimir Kramnik, Daniil Dubov, Yangyi Yu of China, Vidit Gujrathi and Karthikeyan Murali of India and Param Maghsodlo of Iran were participating in the tournament. “Delighted to win the exciting Asia Oceania Group of the World Chess Armageddon Championship Series 2023,” Gukesh tweeted after the win. Former world champion Viswanathan Anand lauded the young grandmaster’s achievement. Anand tweeted, “Congratulations to D Gukesh. An impressive feat, especially considering the different time controls. Proud that our disciple from Vakaches has made us proud once again.

Each day of the tournament, the match consisted of two blitz games and, if necessary, an Armageddon game (five minutes for white, four minutes for black). The Armageddon bet is a variant of the blitz bet that is played when the match is drawn. In the event of a draw in the Armageddon bet, the player with the black piece is declared the winner.
