Iyer will be back in the team only if he is in a position to bear the burden of Test matches: Dravid

Indian team head coach Rahul Dravid on Wednesday said that middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer will “come back” to the Test team on the basis of his past performances if he is in a position to handle the workload for five-day matches. Iyer had suffered a lower back injury during the limited overs series against Sri Lanka last month. He was doing rehabilitation (process of recovering from injury) at the National Cricket Academy for the last one month. Due to this injury, he could not make it to the team for the first test of the series and Suryakumar Yadav was included in the playing XI in his place.

Dravid did not elaborate on Iyer’s fitness requirement for the Test but shared the team management’s view that any good performer who returns from injury automatically finds his place in the team. Will get back He said, “It is always good for someone to come back from injury. We don’t like to lose players due to injuries and it is not good for any team. In this matter, we will take some decision after the practice session.

Dravid and the team’s medical team will assess Iyer’s match fitness after the second and final training session on Thursday. The coach said, “He did some practice today. We will assess it again tomorrow and see how he is feeling. If he is ready for this, then he will get a place in the team. Iyer has not played any competitive match for 32 days and entering the Test match without any practice match can be harmful for his body.

Dravid, however, said that even if a replacement player has scored a century or taken a five-wicket haul, he will still get a place in the playing XI on his return from injury. “Yeah, it’s not like it’s a rule written in stone but definitely, we value the contribution of those who have been there and been out of the team due to injury,” he said. He deserves a place in the team to come back.
