Punjab Kings beat Mumbai Indians with the help of Arshdeep in the last over

After a quick half-century innings by stand-in captain Sam Curran and a 50-ball 92-run partnership for the fifth wicket with Harpreet Bhatia, Arshdeep Singh (4/29 in 4 overs) bowled brilliantly, helping the Punjab Kings win the Indian Premier League. Defeated Mumbai Indians by 13 runs in T20 match here on Saturday. Mumbai needed 16 runs to win in the last over but Arshdeep Singh conceded just two runs in successive balls as Tilak Verma (three) and Nehal Wadhera (naught) were bowled. Earlier, he also took the wickets of Ishan Kishan (one run) and Suryakumar Yadav (57 runs in 26 balls).

Punjab restricted Mumbai to 201 for six after scoring 214 for eight. Curran hit five fours and four sixes in his 29-ball 55 while Bhatia hit four fours and two sixes during his 28-ball 41. Piyush Chawla was the most successful bowler for Mumbai Indians, taking two wickets for 15 runs in three overs. Jason Behrendorff, Cameron Green, Jofra Archer and Arjun Tendulkar also got one success each but all these bowlers proved to be expensive.

Chasing the target, half-centuries from Cameron Green and Suryakumar and a 36-ball 75-run partnership between the two added to the excitement of the match. Green scored 67 runs in 43 balls with the help of six fours and three sixes while Suryakumar hit seven fours and three sixes in his stormy innings of 57 runs in 26 balls. Green had earlier shared a 50-ball 76-run partnership for the second wicket with captain Rohit Sharma. Rohit hit four fours and three sixes in his innings of 44 runs in 27 balls. Chasing the target, Mumbai was shocked by the dismissal of Ishan Kishan (one run in four balls) in the second over.

He became the victim of Arshdeep Singh. When Green, who came to the crease, opened his hand by sending Harpreet Brar’s ball to the audience, Rohit hit sixes against Arshdeep and then against Curren. In the power play, the team made a good start by scoring 54 runs for one wicket. Rohit meanwhile hit a spectacular six over the bowler’s head against Rahul Chahar in the ninth over. Curren handed the ball to Livingstone in the 10th over and the bowler gave Mumbai a second blow by taking a catch in his ball after taking a four.

Suryakumar hit a hat-trick four against this bowler in the 12th over to complete the team’s century. Green completed his half-century by hitting a six and then a four against Chahar in the 15th over. Mumbai now needed 31 runs in two overs and Tim David (25 not out in 13 balls) collected 15 runs from Ellis’s six in the root over.

Arshdeep Singh turned the match towards Punjab by putting a brilliant yorker in the last over. Earlier, after deciding to field, Green gave Mumbai the first success by dismissing Matthew Shot (11 runs in 10 balls) after taking a four in the third over of the innings. From the other end, opener Prabhsimran Singh (26 off 17 balls) hit two sixes against Jason Behrendorff, while Atharva Tayde (29 off 17 balls) hit a six over the slip against Jofra Archer. Both the batsmen hit one boundary each against Piyush Chawla in the sixth over to take the team’s score to 58 for one in the power play.

In the next over, Arjun Tendulkar trapped Prabhsimran Singh lbw and broke his 25-ball 47-run partnership with Tayde for the second wicket. Chawla gave Punjab two blows in the 10th over. While Liam Livingstone (10 runs in 12 balls) was stumped, Tayde played the ball on the wicket. Harpreet Bhatia and captain Sam Curran could only muster 22 runs in the next four overs. Curren accelerated the run rate by hitting a six against Hrithik Shokin in the 15th over, while he welcomed Tendulkar with a six in the 16th over. Punjab collected 31 runs from this over. This equals the costliest over of this IPL. While Harpreet hit Archer, Curren hit a six off two consecutive balls against Green. Green bowled Bhatia on the fourth ball of the 18th over but Jitesh Sharma, who came to the crease, hit two consecutive sixes. Curran completed his first half-century of this season by hitting two fours against Archer in the 19th over but was dismissed on the last ball.
