Shiv Thapa withdraws from quarterfinals of Narendra Strandja Memorial due to fever

Indian boxer Narendra won a split decision to enter the quarter-finals of the Strandja Memorial International Boxing Tournament here on Wednesday but veteran boxer Shiva Thapa pulled out of his bout due to fever. The super heavyweight (+92kg) contest between Narender and Ecuador’s Congo Guerlon was a thrilling contest but the Indian boxer made good use of his height to win 3-2 in the end. Unfortunately, India’s experienced player Shiv Thapa could not enter the ring due to fever, giving Malik Hasanov of Azerbaijan a walkover in this pre-quarterfinal encounter.

In the day’s other bouts, Varinder Singh (60kg) crashed out after losing 0-5 to Uzbekistan’s Abdumurodov Dilsoh and Sumit to Bulgaria’s Rami Kivan 1-4. In the bouts played on Tuesday night, Sachin (54 kg) of India defeated Henrik Sahkyan of Armenia 4-1. He will next face Shakhzod Muzaffaroz of Uzbekistan. Akash (67kg) registered a comfortable 5-0 win over his Bulgarian opponent Rosen Markov. He will take on Italy’s Manuel Lombardi in his next bout. Meanwhile, Sahil crashed out in the 80kg category after losing 0-5 to Serbia’s Vladimir Mironchikov.
