Johannesburg. South African all-rounder Dwayne Pretorius has retired from international cricket with immediate effect to focus on ‘T20s and other shorter formats’. Since making his debut in 2016, the 33-year-old Pretorius has played 30 T20 Internationals, 27 One Day Internationals and three Test matches for South Africa. By taking five wickets for 17 runs against Pakistan in 2021, Pretorius held the record for the best bowling in men’s T20 International for South Africa.

Pretorius said in a statement issued by Cricket South Africa (CSA) on Monday, “A few days ago I made one of the toughest decisions of my cricket career. I have decided to retire from all forms of international cricket. However, my only goal in life was to play for South Africa. I didn’t know how it would happen but God gave me the talent and the will to achieve success. ,

The all-rounder said that by retiring from the national team, he would be able to balance his career and family in a better way as he would be able to play in the best T20 leagues around the world as a free agent. Pretorius has played in two World Cups and took nine wickets in the 2021 T20 World Cup in the UAE. He has also scored 261 runs at a strike rate of 164.15. He is currently associated with several T20 franchise tournaments including the Indian Premier League (Chennai Super Kings), The Hundred (Welsh Fire), Caribbean Premier League and SA20 (Durban Supergiants).
