Mushfiqur’s century, Bangladesh clamped down on Ireland

Mushfiqur Rahim struck a century as Bangladesh put on a strong display to end the first innings at 369 on the second day of the one-off Test against Ireland here on Wednesday. Mushfiqur scored a century of 126 while Ireland off-spinner Andy McBrine took a career-best six for 118. On a rapidly deteriorating pitch, the Bangladeshi spinners reduced Ireland to 27 for four at stumps. Ireland scored 214 runs in the first innings.

Captain Shakib Al Hasan (two wickets) and fellow spinner Taijul Islam (two wickets) took four wickets each. By the end of the day’s play, Peter Moore was on 10 and first innings centurion Harry Tector was on eight. Shakib had earlier missed out on his sixth century by 13 runs but after initial jitters he combined with Mushfiqur to help Bangladesh take control. Shakib hit 14 fours during his innings of 87 runs.

Bangladesh started playing ahead of 34 runs for two wickets in the morning. Liton Das was dismissed after scoring 43 runs after losing the wicket of Mominul Haque (17). Mushkikur brought up his 10th Test century, hitting 16 fours and a six during his 126-run innings. Wickets kept falling at regular intervals and Mehidy Hasan meanwhile brought up his fourth Test half-century. He was the last batsman to be dismissed for 54 runs. Ireland is playing its first Test match since 2019.
