Satwik and Chirag reach career-best fifth ranking

Star Indian men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty on Tuesday achieved their career-best world number five ranking after winning the Badminton Asia Championships title. The 2022 World Championships bronze medalist pair became the first Indians after Dinesh Khanna to win a title at the continental championships, ending a 58-year drought. Satwik and Chirag, who became the world number five pair in December last year, have gained one place to be fifth in the latest BWF rankings.

Satwik and Chirag defeated the Malaysian pair of Ong Yew Sin and Teo Yee Yee 16-21, 21-17, 21-19 in the final. Another Indian pair of Dhruv Kapila and MR Arjun has also gained four places to reach the 23rd position. In men’s singles, HS Prannoy remained static at ninth while Kidambi Srikanth and Lakshya Sen gained one place each to be at 22nd and 23rd respectively. Mithun Manjunath has jumped five places to become the world’s number 41 player. In women’s singles, PV Sindhu has slipped to 12th position while Tanya Hemant has moved up to 55th position. Women’s doubles pair of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand moved up two places to be at 17th position.
