Tamil Nadu’s Jagadishan scored 277 runs in 141 balls, made the world record for the highest score in List A
Tamil Nadu batsman Narayan Jagadishan on Monday created a world record for the highest individual score in List A cricket by smashing 277 off 141 balls against Arunachal Pradesh in the Vijay Hazare Trophy one-day cricket tournament. In this Group C match, Tamil Nadu won by 435 runs, the biggest margin of victory in a List A match. The previous record for the biggest win was held by Somerset, who beat Devon by 346 runs in 1990.
The 26-year-old Jagadishan broke Surrey’s Alistair Brown’s record of 268 against Glamorgan in 2002 for the highest List A score. Jagadishan also broke Rohit Sharma’s record for the highest List A score by an Indian during this innings, who had scored 264 in the One Day International against Sri Lanka. Tamil Nadu scored 506 runs for two wickets in this match, which is the highest team score in men’s List A cricket. The previous record was in the name of England, who scored 498 for four against the Netherlands earlier this year. The previous highest team score in List A in India was Mumbai’s 457 for four against Puducherry in Jaipur in 2021.
Veteran India cricketer and Jagadishan’s Tamil Nadu teammate Dinesh Karthik congratulated him and tweeted, “World record alert. What a great effort by Jagdishan. I am very happy for him. Big things await. For Sai Sudarshan too, the ongoing tournament has been a great one. This opening pair is destroying the opponents. Well done.” Pointing to the level difference between the two teams, Karthik said in another tweet, “Also, is it wise to pit NE teams against elite teams in the league stage itself?” .

Jagadeesan hit the Arunachal bowlers with a flurry of records. He brought up the 200 in just 114 balls, equaling the record for the fastest double century in List A history. Travis Head scored a 114-ball double century against Queensland in Australia’s Marsh Cup last year while playing for South Australia.
Jagadishan hit 15 sixes in his innings, which also made him the batsman with most sixes in a Vijay Hazare Trophy match. He surpassed Yashasvi Jaiswal who hit 12 sixes during his innings of 203 runs in the 2019-20 season. The right-handed batsman also scored his fifth consecutive List A century, which is a new record. Jagadishan also surpassed Prithvi Shaw’s record for the highest individual score in the Vijay Hazare Trophy (227 against Puducherry). The wicket-keeper batsman from Tamil Nadu became only the sixth batsman to score a double century in India’s top ODI competition. Jagadishan added 416 runs for the first wicket with B Sai Sudarshan, which is the record for the highest partnership for any wicket in List A cricket. Sudarshan scored 154 runs in 102 balls with the help of 19 fours and two sixes.

The previous highest partnership was between Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels of the West Indies who added 372 runs for the second wicket during an ODI in 2015. The previous highest partnership record in India’s domestic ODI cricket was in the name of Sanju Samson and Sachin Baby, who shared a 338-run partnership for Kerala against Goa in 2019. Jagadeesan on Saturday equaled Kumar Sangakkara, Alviro Pietersen and Devdutt Paddikal for the most consecutive hundreds in List A cricket with his fourth consecutive century. Jagadishan also scored centuries against Haryana, Chhattisgarh, Andhra and Goa in the ongoing Vijay Hazare tournament before hitting 277 against Arunachal on Monday.
With his fifth century in the ongoing tournament, Jagadishan also broke the previous record of scoring four centuries in a single tournament. Virat Kohli, Devdutt Padikkal, Prithvi Shaw and Ruturaj Gaikwad have done the feat of scoring four centuries each in a tournament. Jagadishan has not been retained by Chennai Super Kings ahead of next month’s Indian Premier League auction. Meanwhile, Chetan Anand of Arunachal looted 114 runs in 10 overs.
