Three Indians in Knockouts of Amches Rapid Online Chess Tournament

Three Indian players D Gukesh, Arjun Arigesi and Vidit Santosh Gujrathi have made it to the knockouts of the Amches Rapid online chess tournament. In the knockouts, Gukesh will face Richard Repert while Arigesi will take on world number one Magnus Carlsen. The Gujarati has to face Poland’s Yan Christoph Duda.

Gukesh and Arigesi, who defeated world champion Carlsen in the opening round, finished second and fourth respectively. Gujrathi finished eighth in the knockout spot. Gukesh (27 points) finished one point behind Duda. Arigacy also scored 27 points. All three Indian players registered victories in the 15th and final round. Gukesh defeated Repert while Arigesi defeated Anish Giri of Netherlands. Gukesh started the final day with a loss against Germany’s Vincent Kemmer but then went on to beat fellow Indians Aditya Mittal and Repert.

Gujrati was not among the top eight players after the 12th round. He defeated Mittal and Spain’s David Anton Guizarro in the 13th and 15th rounds respectively while drawing a draw with Repert in the 14th round. With impressive performances in the last three rounds, they were able to enter the quarter-finals. Giri’s defeat against Arigesi benefited the Gujaratis, who won three of their last four games. Carlsen’s form was fluctuating in the early stages. He finished fifth with 26 points.

He defeated Duda in the final round before drawing two games against Daniil Naroditsky and Giri. P Harikrishna finished 13th with 14 points while young Grandmaster Mittal finished 15th with 12 points. The Amches Rapid Tournament is part of the Meltwater Champions Tour and 16 players, including five Indians, are taking part.
