US Open: Sindhu and Lakshya win in first round, Sai Praneeth loses

Council Bluffs. Olympic medalist shuttlers PV Sindhu and Lakshya Sen registered first-round wins in the women’s and men’s sections respectively of the US Open Super 300 tournament here. While Sindhu defeated Indian-American Diksha Gupta 21-15, 21-12 in just 27 minutes, Sen defeated Finland’s Kale Koljonen 21-8, 21-16 in just 30 minutes. In another men’s singles match, SS Subramaniam defeated his Irish opponent Nahat Nguyen 21-11, 21-16 in 44 minutes in the first round. B Sai Praneeth, however, lost to world number seven Li Shi Feng in a three-game contest.

Second seed Shi Feng of China defeated Praneeth 16-21, 21-14, 21-19 in a match that lasted one hour and 14 minutes. In another women’s singles match, India’s 61st ranked Ruthvika Shivani was defeated. Former Commonwealth Games champion P Kashyap retired in his second match on Tuesday. He defeated England’s Rohan Midha in the first match. Men’s doubles pair of Krishna Prasad Garaga and Vishnuvardhan Goud Panjala also failed to cross the first round hurdle, going down in straight games 14-21, 14-21 to Chinese Taipei’s Lin Yu Chie and Su Li Wei.
