‘Who is the captain of Team India after Rohit Sharma’, questioning the selector, Vengsarkar said – he has no vision

The Indian cricket team is having a tough time on the field. Rohit Sharma’s India recently suffered a defeat against Australia in the final of the World Test Championship 2023 at The Oval. With this, the wait for the ICC title has become longer. Despite making it to the knockout stages on several occasions, the ICC trophy spot is still vacant since 2013. In the midst of all this, questions are also being raised about the future of Team India. A former World Cup winner and ex-selector pointedly asks who will carry on with current skipper Rohit Sharma?

In a conversation, former India cricketer Dilip Vengsarkar bluntly said that the selectors have no vision for the future and do not even understand cricket. He said that the unfortunate thing is that the selectors whom I have seen in the last six-seven years have neither vision, nor deep knowledge of the game, nor understanding of cricket. Vengsarkar said that he made Shikhar Dhawan the captain of India (when India’s matches overlapped and key players were unavailable). He said that this is where you can groom the future captain. He said that they failed to identify an ideal candidate as captain after Rohit.

 

Continuing his question, he said that you have not prepared anyone. You just play as you come. You talk about the richest cricket board in the world, where is the bench strength? Just having IPL, earning crores of rupees in media rights should not be the only achievement. Dilip Vengsarkar expressed criticism towards the management, saying that they had failed to nurture someone and were playing the game as it came. He questioned the whereabouts of the pool of talented players who were waiting in the wings, despite being associated with the richest cricket board in the world.
