Alcaraz became the world’s number one again after winning the first match at the Italian Open

ROME. Carlos Alcaraz has regained the number one spot in the world rankings after winning his debut match at the Italian Open tennis tournament. Alcaraz beat Albert Ramos Vinolas 6-4, 6-1 to replace Novak Djokovic as the top seed. This also ensured that he would get the first seeding in the French Open starting May 28. Alcaraz, who arrived here after winning titles in Barcelona and Madrid, has taken his winning streak to 12 matches. His record on clay courts has become 20-1 this year. Alcaraz will next face either Jiri Leheka or qualifier Fabian Marozsson of Hungary.

In other men’s second-round matches, sixth seed Andre Rublev beat Alex Molken 6-3, 6-4, Lorenzo Sonego beat Yoshihito Nishioka 7-5, 6-3, JJ Wolff beat 14th seed Hubert Hercz. 6-3, 6-4 and Borna Coric defeated Thiago Monteiro 4-6, 7-6(8), 7-6(5). In women’s third-round matches, Colombian qualifier Camila Osorio beat fifth seed Caroline Garcia 6-4, 6-4, Angelina Kalinina beat Sofia Kenin 6-4, 6-2 and Wang Ziyu beat Taylor Townsend. Defeated 6-2, 0-6, 7-5.
