Ankit Gulia in race for bronze, Sajan Bhanwala out

Ankit Gulia remained in contention for a bronze medal in the UWW Ranking Series wrestling event after winning the repechage round but India’s other Greco-Roman wrestlers, including Sajan Bhanwala, put up a disappointing performance here on Friday. Gulia won by technical superiority against Nurzhigit Keneshbek Ulu of Kyrgyzstan in the 72kg category. India’s medal contender Sajan Bhanwala, however, made a disappointing exit in the 77kg category.

He lost in the first round to Yunus Emre Basar of Turkey by technical superiority. Ashu lost to Razzak Beushekiv of Kyrgyzstan in the bronze medal playoff in the 67kg category, while Rohit Dahiya failed to progress beyond the qualification round in the 82kg category. He was defeated by Christopher Zacharias Berg of Sweden. Sunil Kumar lost to Sweden’s Alex Kassidis in the bronze medal playoff in the 87kg category, while Narendra Cheema lost to Austria’s Markus Raginger in the pre-quarterfinals of the 97kg category.

Naveen lost to China’s Lingzhe Meng in the 130kg category. In the women’s section, Seeto (57kg) lost to Bulgaria’s Evelina Georgieva Nikolova, while Sumitra (62kg) lost by technical superiority to Bulgaria’s Mimi Hristova. Radhika lost to Czech Republic’s Adela Hanjlikova in the quarterfinals in the 68kg category. In the 76kg category, Kiran will fight for the bronze medal against Kazakhstan’s Elmira Syjdikova after losing to China’s Xuan Wang in the semi-finals. Top wrestlers of India are not participating in this competition.
