Dubai. The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Wednesday confirmed that the final of the second World Test Championship (WTC) between the top two Test teams will be played at The Oval from June 7 to 11, with June 12 as the reserve day. The Oval has hosted over 100 Test matches and the top two teams on the ICC World Test Championship table will face off here in June. The ICC WTC Final is the top match of the Test calendar.
The top two teams of the ICC WTC will be decided after playing 24 series and 61 Test matches over two years. The top two teams that will play the final are yet to be decided but there are several important matches lined up in the next few weeks which will decide the top two teams. Australia is currently leading the points table while India is at the second position. Both these teams will play a four-Test series in Nagpur from Thursday. Right now six teams have a chance to qualify for the finals.
The top two teams will face tough competition from third-placed Sri Lanka and fourth-placed South Africa. South Africa are scheduled to play two Test series against defending WTC champions New Zealand and West Indies in February and March. On the prospect of securing a spot in the WTC final, Australia captain Pat Cummins said, “The prospect of playing in a World Test Championship final has motivated us a lot over the years, especially after missing out on over-rate last time around.”
“We are confident that after playing solid cricket over the last 12 months, we will be able to cement our place here in India. Making it to the final will be a great reward for the players and support staff who have done such a great job.” Indian skipper Rohit Sharma is looking forward to playing in his second consecutive World Test Championship final.
He said, “It will be special to lead the Indian team in the World Test Championship final.” But we know we have to deal with a strong Australia team first. I am thrilled at the prospect of making it to the finals and hope we make history.
