Nikhat, Lovlina have qualified for Asian Games: India’s High Performance Director Bernard

India’s High Performance Director Bernard Dunne on Saturday confirmed that star boxers Nikhat Zareen and Lovlina Borgohain have qualified for the Asian Games, which is also the first qualifier for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. As per the Boxing Federation of India’s Asian Games selection policy, “The players who have won gold/silver medals in the World Championships will automatically be selected for the first Olympic qualifiers in the Asian Games. ,

This means that Nikhat (50kg) and Lovlina (75kg) have qualified for the continental tournament having reached the light flyweight and middleweight finals respectively. Bernard Dunne told reporters, “Those who win gold or silver medals in the World Championships here will automatically be selected for the Asian Games.” For the Asian Games, women boxers will compete in five weight categories: 51kg, 57kg, 60kg, 69kg and 75kg, while in the Olympics there are six weight categories which are 50kg, 54kg, 57kg, 60kg, 66kg and are 75 kg.

This means reigning world champion Neetu Gangas (48kg) and finalist Sweety Boora (81kg) will be standby boxers in case they decide to switch to Olympic weight categories. “Anyone who changes weight classes will have to finish second or third,” Dunne said. But if something happens to the boxer who qualifies, we would like to have our number 2 or 3 boxers ready.
