Former Australia captain Ian Chappell believes Test skipper Ben Stokes can learn a lot from his match-winning performances in the T20 World Cup. Stokes once again proved his skills in the big matches by scoring an unbeaten half-century against Pakistan in the final of the T20 World Cup. He played memorable innings in the ODI World Cup final in 2019 and the Ashes Test series. Chappell wrote in his column for ‘ESPNcricinfo’ that Stokes could learn a lot from his recent T20 success as captain and batsman.
He said, “Stokes has a great record of performing at his best in big matches. He has played many remarkable innings in test and one day matches. He has now achieved such a feat in T20 cricket as well. It is no wonder that England captain Jos Buttler demanded his inclusion in the World Cup squad. He took time off in the league stage but started off better than the do-or-die match against Sri Lanka. Stokes was named Test captain in place of Joe Root earlier this year in view of England’s prolonged poor performance. The pairing of him and new coach Brendon McCullum has brought some great success to the team in a short span of time.

The former Australia captain said, “Despite playing some careless innings, Stokes has achieved miraculous results in his first season as Test captain. Such starts convinced him that sometimes he needed to bat a little more carefully in the longer format. England needs a good game of Stokes. “Chappell said,” It is also a fact that Butler pushed a lot to include Stokes in the team. The captain’s faith in him even after playing less in this format speaks volumes about his knowledge of the game.
